Thanks to Robert for organising yesterday and helping to get the old tandem and my Falcon back on the road. I was chatting to one or two of you about my father. His page on the cycle archives site is here: www.cyclingarchives.com/coureurfiche.php?coureurid=15187I will get the photos that were taken by Kenilworth castle and post them here later in the week.

Here's the route that Vaughan and I cycled, though others took more scenic option(s) from Burton Green to Hatton. Thanks to Anne's spare wheel delivery service after Vaughan's freewheel dismantled itself on the Kenilworth Greenway, we were able to ride the A4177 from Burton Green to Hatton. DFR6 route (short) by RMT@261, on Flickr Our trip home was quite an adventure - after a most enjoyable evening chatting with Scott, John (the former employee), Peter Britton and Mick Ives about the Bilston era, Vaughan and I left ourselves an interesting journey along the canal towpath in the dark. Against the odds, we seem to have survived. Beer + Bikes + Canal - Lights. What could possibly have gone wrong?

Thanks to Rob from Dave and me for sn excellent day yesterday and to Jeremy for guiding us on the (inadvertant) 50km route. Sorry to have had to miss the evening chat session. Look forward to seeing pics. Dave and I listened with increasing incredulity to the match commentary on the way to Dave's car near Newbury. Result so stunning we were forced to have a small extra libation before heading for home.

Awwww, I'm glad you had such a great day. Very sad to have missed out. Excellent group photos, as usual. The first ever men only Viscount rally, eh?

Lovely to see and ride with everyone yesterday - I thoroughly enjoyed the day - but a pity Whippet, Busaste, Stella, rmw, Mr & Mrs Raymondo, Lewis, Stoatie, Goldie and others weren’t with us.
A few mechanical issues popped up - Vaughan’s self-destructing freewheel, several dropped chains and several occasions when the nose of Pete’s saddle made his eyes water by almost giving him a prostate gland examination!
A very big Thank You must go to Rob for pulling the whole thing together, booking the camp site - even though it wasn’t ultimately needed - and the advice and then alternative advice about train times and stations.
No pictures from me - I didn’t take any. Rob’s helpers knew the route and guided us around it so efficiently that we didn’t get lost and stop, and that’s when pictures tend to get taken.
Gutted that I couldn’t stay and meet the bods who worked for Viscount - I bet it was a rollicking good evening for Rob, Vaughan and Scott.
Roll on our next meet.

Many thanks to Robt for his hospitality at the Hatton. Quite a trip down a Memory Lane last travelled (gulp)over 40 years ago. Mick Ives brought a lot of racing photos from the mid seventies, when Coventry Olympic Cycling Club was formed to be sponsored by Viscount. He aso dug out some special frames from the era. We had no photos from inside Bilston or Potters Bar (in those days a photo needed a camera and a trip to Boots to see what came out) but our chat over dinner and some papers Peter had found brought back many memories and furrowed brows about what happened when. Incidentally, the 'name' at Yamaha (in the USA) that I couldn't remember, Rob, was John Maclaren. Steve has many bits of text and although very sorry (and saddened to hear his news) he couldn't make it, maybe he can start an editing process on the unexpurgated, warts'n'all history?

Thank you all for turning up yesterday and your kind comments. I can't claim any credit for the weather or the football results, but everything else seemed to go OK too. I have uploaded a selection of pictures from yesterday evening's chats with John, Peter (on the right in the first picture) and Mick (in all three b/w pictures below) onto the V&L Forum Flickr site. Take a look through them and either I or, possibly, John will be happy to answer queries on specific photos as best we can. You have to admire the contents of Mick Ives' 'bits box', but I must admit to being a little bit starstruck when John opened his presentation box of bubble-wrapped, pristine Viscount hubs. Here are a few of my favourites: IMG_0016 by RMT@261, on Flickr IMG_0015 by RMT@261, on Flickr IMG_0004 by RMT@261, on Flickr IMG_0070_2 by RMT@261, on Flickr IMG_0032_2 by RMT@261, on Flickr IMG_0033_2 by RMT@261, on Flickr Please excuse any distorted perspectives or inadequate lighting - there's only so much a boy can do in a pub with an iPhone and four ashtrays to hold the photos' corners down! I think Vaughan has some more pictures of Mick Ives' frame collection on his phone - my battery ran down in all the excitement!

Hi Rbt,
One big wow over DFR6! Great photo's from the Mick Ives glory days of Viscount racing. The inspiring thing about Mick is that he's still riding and doing the Giro de Italy solo/supported this year at 77. He gives me hope! I thoroughly enjoyed looking through them and I can only imagine the great stories that came with them! Thanks for sharing! Good to see Pete looking recovered and back at it and on the way to soloing next year. I made sure to get out on my Aerospace Pro for a solidarity ride!
Cheers, Michael

I am in contact with John McLaren's son, who has provided Steve (Busaste) with information. I think I have posted here some pictures he sent, but I can link to them again if they have now got lost in the history of the forum. I have sent him links to the forum today and to the photos on Flickr.

a) I'll switch Mick Ives to the Hatton Arms - Peter is coming with me (not by tandem.....) and b)a rally in North London could include a visit to the place in Potters Bar where the 'rump' of Viscount wound up until it shut the lights off in the early 80s. Good access to the area known as Little Switzerland - small ring, big sprocket territory. Kind regards, John (b) Sounds a good idea and similar to DFR4.5 in 2016. Some photos here: viscountandlambert.boards.net/post/9770And some from Scott here: www.flickr.com/photos/124853585@N02/albums/72157673437648842and a link to his strava on the day: www.strava.com/activities/732108870Unfortunately I couldn't go to this ride. Was that the right building or site? The original post code doesn't work and this seemed to be the nearest factory building - looks old enough. I'll start a new thread for this: UK Lambert / Viscount Meets 2018 - 6.5

Many thanks to everyone for such a great day in fine company. Especial thanks to Phil for hauling me around Warwickshire!!!! For those who have an interest in medical matters, the saddle incident(s) have left a rather garish bruise on my right inner thigh. Painful! As Stella pointed out,no lady riders, but thanks to Anne for her help shifting my car to the Hatton Arms and Vaughn's wheel replacement. Super domestique. Great to see you all again, and some welcome new faces. Cheers, Pete.

Sorry I missed a day in the hot sun riding with Viscount buddies. Greetings to all. A ride in the dark along the canal - ooh, brave! It was a challenging ride in daylight last time.

I have sourced a 27mm seatpost for the tandem, and we’ll be a bit more judicious with the saddle re-fitting to avoid any repeats of your discomfort. I had to explain the difference between a cycling ‘domestique’ and a ‘domestic’ to Anne, but she was grateful for your compliment in the end! Thank you. Best wishes for a full recovery.

"As Stella pointed out,no lady riders" - but that saddle was only a hairsbreadth from performing radical reassignment surgery on Pete!
This was a cracking day out (in Pete's case, dam' near a nutcracking one), and all thanks to Rob for his organisation.
