If anyone is looking for a used guitar without breaking the bank, then I can certainly recommend hunting one of these down. Not the easiest to find but I have seen 3 in the last few weeks It is a 1992 Fender Squier Made In Japan Waynes World Stratocaster and was a tie in with the film of the same name. Due to the fact that they didn't really market them very well, and that serious guitar players didn't want to be associated with a comedy film guitar, they were only made for less than a year and really didn't sell well, despite being over £50 cheaper (£189 vs £249) for the almost identical 'Silver Series' models. It's a reissue of a '64 Fender Strat The build of this guitar is up there with anything that I have played and the neck and pick ups are without exaggeration the best I have ever played....really, that good. It's also nice and light (basswood body) and the radius of the neck is 7.25" and is a medium 'C' shape, which is my preference. George Harrison played a Silver Series Squier live a few times, and that was pretty much the same guitar as this. . I can't think of a better recommendation than that. Although he later gave it away to Spike Milligan. The only easy way to indicate that this was a Waynes World Strat was a plate on the back of the neck. Most people seem to have taken them off and replaced with a blank stainless steel plate replacement . I also heard that when they didn't sell, Squire just took the WW neck plate off and shipped them out to sell(does that sound familiar with a certain Viscount practise?) But,here are the buying tips. It's got an M serial number, says made in Japan on the head- on the tip of the head (front) it says in lettered script 'original contour body', and then it has a skunk strip down the back of the neck then you've got a WW1. Only made with rosewood fretboard. The pick ups, if original , are likely to have yellowed. beware, there are WW2 which are made in Mexico but they aren't in the same league. And if you see one at a steal price and want to message me to authenticate before buying, then feel free to to run it past me. The Silver Series will be twice as much as this, unless the person selling knows its a WW. In the US they have quiet a following and can fetch $500 there, but here nearer $250. Happy hunting! I've just aquired a Cort Z42 in a tiger stripe red finish. I don't think it's ever been played! A shorter scale than your Fender,25.5 is a bit big for my small arthritic hands! I've yet to try it through a decent amp though. They retail at about £280,I got mine for £51. Cheers, Pete.

That's funny Pete - I am eyeing up a Cort on ebay at the moment. Let me know what you think. Does it have the rather sturdy but well designed Wilkinson bridge? (with trem?) Where did you get yours?
The Fender Squire above is a very slim neck as it goes...7.25" radius, a 41mm nut width. This is one of the exceptions though, most are bigger. This is perfect for me.
EDIT- Just realised that Cort you got is a Les Paul style, not strat, so the bridge question is redundant

Hi Jem. I got my Cort of ebay and a friend picked it up for me as I wasn't allowed to drive for a month. That was rather a long month!!!! It seems a great bit of kit,but I need to dress the fret ends as I think it has been stored to near a radiator and the neck has dried out. An hours work with a ward file should sort it. I've not done any measuring, but it seems a standard 43mm nut. Which Cort are you watching? Cheers, Pete.

Bill Kirchen's birthday is today, speaking of. I guess it must be about a year ago when we posted about Bill and you tipped me off he was touring UK and I went to see him 'round about March time. I'd go again if he was touring, he is such a great talent and it's a superb show. He had Austin De'lone with him last time so, it was a bonus.

I remember those Silver Series well, the Squire Korean Pro-Tone series were good as well. I read that Fender stopped producing them because they were that good they were impacting on Fender sales. Another one was the Vista series, they were Squires made in Japan.

This looks like a great tip, I’d actually pay extra to have a Wayne’s World Strat! Only just started learning using Fender Play but will bare this in mind.

I just couldn't help picking up cheap but decent quality guitars. Squier really do make a great guitar. A bit like a second hand Viscount, there's no better bang for your buck I'd go Classic Vibe if I could only have one guitar under £250. Superb build quality

Classic Vibe are nice guitars for the money. I have a modified a Duo Sonic and Telecaster, I play them more than my Fenders.

By the way Kev, if you decide to go 'used' and want someone to cast an eye over a guitar before you buy, to check it's not a Franken-parts guitar then feel free to send a pic/link my way. I'm only good for Fender and Squier , outside of that I am clueless.

That’s great thanks Jem :-) I suppose initially I should knuckle down and actually learn to the play the semi acoustic I’ve had for 15 years ( started Fender Play a few weeks ago ). If / when I go electric I’ll definitely come to you thanks. PS love the picture of the 2 WW Squires!

PS at what point does one decide to play bass? Seems like there’s no obvious route when learning.

EDIT -guttering? GUTTERING? Where did that come from? Autocorrect ! I of course meant guitaring

I have a Hofner (not the violin McCartney one) but a fun short scale 60's one, that does me fine for recording. I used to play it in a band way way back. I enjoyed it but just wasn't educated enough music theory wise to really be any good on it.

I’m a big fan of forums too. As for guitar I like my offset Fenders so mostly hung around them places. It’s a shame a lot of forums went quiet, seemed to coincide with the popularity of social media, especially Facebook. But I suppose if it’s a bit niche there’s only so much you can talk about the same thing over and over again? This place reminds me of a guitar forum I use, traffic is slow but it seems tight knit with some very knowledgeable people on here.

I think it's interesting how different forums have a different vibes. But I agree that once where forum were the main knowledge exchange and meet up place, Facebook groups have taken that place. I quite like Reditt though and browse that most days on my phone. I really didn't want to do Facebook , mainly because I think it's a crap interface that doesn't even look nice , but I had to get it purely for the Marketplace after I saw my wife on there (Clarification -I saw her looking at Marketplace , I didn't find her on Marketplace...I met her in a club haha)

Shame. Interesting picture in my mind of the guttering falling down due to your strong keyboard action.

I thought I'd be playing piano quite a bit more with this lockdown, but my wife isn't a big fan of my piano 'style'. When she asked me to give it a rest the other week, I said 'you never say that to our son when he is playing...she replied 'yeah, but he can actually play'. Ouch...that hurt.

Family members can be quite candid about musical "styles", as you put it. Years ago I was thinking out loud about acquiring some new instrument (banjo, mandolin, tenor guitar) when my then 16-year old daughter chimed in with "Why don't you just master the ones you already have?". Good point.

My missus plays piano and is a vocal instructor, lucky for me it’s quite a musical house. She does get fed up of certain riffs I play on guitar though, for some reason I always warm up with the same few, the Crazy Train intro from Blizzard of Oz annoys her the most.

Thomann have some really nice cheap guitars, Harley Benton. I bought a fretless bass, didn't want to spend mad money on one in case I didn't like fretless. It's got really nice wood and the electronics seem decent.
