Interesting article in the Guardian today about the adoption of bicycles by US police forces. Meant to be less confrontational than cops in riot gear, although some of those uniforms look pretty mean. It's goodbye to Electra Glide in Blue then? But reminiscent of Bill Tidy's Cloggies cartoon 'Policeman on a White Bicycle'.

My niece's husband is a motor officer (Motorcycle Cop) and they are as popular as ever. The Electra Glide Harleys have been replaced by BMWs, Kawasakis and the like. Being a Man's Man, I think he would quit if he was made to ride a bicycle. Bicycles are popular patrol vehicles in some urban areas (parks, shopping areas, special events). These officers are armed and usually look like these Texas officers www.victoriatx.org/departments/police/organizational-structure/bicycle-patrolSeeing them in riot gear is a first for me. Riot gear is meant to look intimidating. Bicycles are not intimidating, but are handy. To my knowledge, in the USA , all police officers are armed. To deprive them of self defense would be considered negligent. All the Best Jim

For those mystified by my reference to the Cloggies, see here. 'The Policeman on a White Bicycle' is a cartoon that references the 1923 Cup Final (soccer), when a mounted policeman on a grey (white) horse was prominent in controlling the crowd.

I But reminiscent of Bill Tidy's Cloggies cartoon 'Policeman on a White Bicycle'. Some places in the US still use mounted police for crowd control. Can horses be replaced with bicycles? I don't think bicycles are very useful for pushing a crowd. Riot Vehicles are becoming popular crowd pushers www.megaev.com/police-vehicles/Cheers Jim
