Hi *waves*
I have never seen another Viscount in the flesh, and to think I've had it for ten years and just stumbled upon this place.. (hoping I didn't find it and forget about it :S )
Anyway I'll be back with at least a wonderful story that I'm sure you are all familiar with.
I still regularly ride an Aeropspace, paid $60 for it 10yrs ago not knowing what it was, really was the gateway drug that got me into cycling if I'm honest.
Pretty much in the first couple of months after I bought it? I broke the original headstem pretty much instantly.
Still laced with the whatever Suntour stuff it came with. Spirit derailleurs, little 6sp at the near, Oh these where wheels Mk2 (27x1) on the seccond image, and the headstem had been swapped over to give me a bit more reach.
The high flanged front wheel got destroyed on another bike I had at the time spectacularly.
That front wheel became a nice talking point, sat up on my wall for a while there.
Actually what someone might know. the Mallard sticker accros the top tube. I assume a local bike shop put it there to brand it as a certain spec thing they were selling. I wonder if anyone knows of the shop?
It was purchased from a little old Greek man in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It wasn't clear, but he hinted it was his bike. He was probably 50 at the time so it kinda fits if he bought it.
Anyway. Dam well love this thing. Spent many a miles on it. Slowly but surely, I replaced components as things broke, (crank arm, spindle, headstem). I dug the Suntour stuff so I found early Cyclone bits, and they have been beautiful. A nearly most recent photo (now has Look peddles because I have seen the light);
Now with;
-Mavic 700c wheels,
-Early Cyclone derailleurs and shifters,
-A 7sp shimano cassette because easy,
-Lashed out with Superbe Pro Crank arms / chainrings
-Phil Woods bottom spindle (think I go the link from Sheldown brown and $100~ later a spindle to the right size was delivered)
-Mafac Racer center pull brakes (these are actually awesome, and have an adjuster built in up the top. Win!)
So what, English bike, French wheels and brakes with a Japanese drive-train. Yeah makes sense.
Whats next? I'd like to talk myself into a stiffer fork. The front end feels pretty soft. It's super comfy but, a little vague compared to other forks I've been on. I got scared worrying about headset attachments and having to end up with a quill and not a stem.. oh I'll just look for a standard nice fork maybe.
Anyway it's been a treat, I hope to be on this thing for the next 50yrs at least.
VIV LA BIKE!
