In a moment of madness I was press ganged in to taking up this challenge on my 600ex www.sportivelakes.co.uk/index.php/tmc I have purchased a 39 tooth front chain ring to help on the hills , I have a seven speed rear set up , what is the largest I can go for with the standard 600 derailer ? and also what is the correct size of seat post for this bicycle as I'm sure the one in there is to small . Thanks in advance . Foss ( sorry I've not been here for a while :-( )

I believe the specifications for a Shimano 600EX short cage is 28 tooth maximum cog and 28 teeth of wrap.
I hoe this helps you. Jim

When I did London to Brighton on my 600ex I found a 38t chain wheel and put on a 32t cog. I didn't try the short cage 600ex but instead fitted a Deore M-700 long cage Deer Head RD. This worked fine and would I think have got me up Ditchling Beacon but my legs cramped up. A long cage 600ex RD would be nice but they seem rare and generally expensive. I think I have a couple of long cage Deores and could lend you one to try if you'd like. I'm in Bognor next weekend and could bring one with me.
