I just thought that if we are very organised and serious about this advanced planning for DFR5, then it needed it's own thread.
Just my initial thought on the location - Harrogate is quite a lot further North than any previous ones and would require a good couple of hours more travel time from the South.
*I just checked my fag packet and I can just about squeeze a new line into the Forum Constitution that allows Rob to relinquish planning after one term though...

Jem,
I'd be happy either to re-run the DFR4 accomodation and planning arrangements for DFR5, or to lend a hand to anyone else who'd like to get involved in the planning.
Much as I love Harrogate, it is a bit further North than we're used to, so logistics might be a challenge to some. Perhaps we could have a 'Spring Classic' up there in April/May for those that fancy a slightly hillier ride (and have wind/waterproof jackets), then return to Warwick for the summer meet.
Rob.

Oooooooooooooooh! Southern bias!
Yorkshire's not the ends of the earth, you know: the average journey time between London Kings Cross and York is 1 hour 59 minutes and between KC and Leeds is 2h 15.
Mind you, a "Spring Classic" in April might be challenging the weather gods a bit: if the hailstorm I got caught in this April's anything to judge by, armour plate would be a better bet that Gore-Tex.
Must dash. I've got to get my flat cap on and take t'whippet for a walk.

127 miles for me - fairly standard for DFRs - but a bit far for some from up north? What are rail connexions like? A cider trail is an interesting idea (US translation - cider in the UK is alcoholic, sometimes very), but it might make it difficult to drive there and back in one day.

Our nonalcoholic version is called cider, or sometimes sweet cider. Alcoholic cider is called hard cider (just called cider where the term sweet cider is used). We also have the very alcoholic, applejack (jacking is a process of increasing alcohol content by partial freezing). We also have had a variety of apple wines, sometimes called Apple Annie. When I was in college, sweet "soda pop" apple wines (like Annie Greensprings by Boone's Farm) were popular. Cheers Jim

It's 2017 in the UK now - time to think about DFR5 again. But meanwhile I hope everyone can have a nice first ride of 2017 tomorrow. Weather here threatens to be wet.

Here in the mountains of California, it is snowing; my first ride of 2017 may be on Monday. BTW I still think we should have DFR5 here in California; maybe someone can charter a jet? A Happy New Year to All Jim

Happy New Year to all from the Midlands of England, where it is currently raining. The forecast is looking brighter for tomorrow so I hope to ride out with Jim (in spirit anyway).
Ledbury is about an hour from me by car, so I'd be happy to arrange to meet up for a recce of the route, campsites and cider houses.
Ledbury has its own railway station, on the rural Birmingham to Hereford line, so is accessible for those travelling without cars. The train journey between Birmingham and Ledbury takes just over an hour, and runs half-hourly on Friday evenings, hourly on Saturdays but more sporadically on Sundays.
I'm afraid that I haven't been able to find any cheap weekend return rail fares between Birmingham and Tehachapi, Jim!
Can I suggest we offer Busaste and Lewis first choices for dates this year, given their frustrations at not being able to join us in 2016? June 17/18 is Eroica weekend, so will be out for those of us who've already booked & paid for that.

Happy New Year to all! I agree. If we can offer the dates to Busaste and Lewis, then at least they will have the option to attend. Ledbury is pretty well situated for all? I stayed on this site a couple of years back, and it was great. There are 2 separate fields, some glamping pods, some bunk houses and then some very posh lodges. There is even a small orchard plot that would quite possibly fit us all in and would be a great spot for the evenings gathering. www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=5929Jim -In terms of the charter jet for a US rally - I'm all up for that; just need to have a word with a wealthy sponsor.

Hi
June would be a good month for me for DFR5.
Ledbury looks nice but it is a bit of a nightmare to get to as it's the dreaded M6 - M5 trek; not a problem distance wise but summer traffic means it can take 4 to 5 hours to get down to Bristol from t'north! If the traffic was especially bad it would make there and back in a day a bit of a challenge.
York is nice. Anything a bit fourther north than Ledbury would be okay.
What do people think of this?
Cheers
Steve

I'd be happy to re-run last years' arrangements in Hatton, Warwickshire, but it would still be a long run down the M6 on a Friday evening from the North West, so wouldn't necessarily address Busaste's concern about Ledbury.

I'd be happy to re-visit any of our previous venues.
If the DFR2 venue is available we could have the site to ourselves and the building would be good in case of cold, rain, wind or a combination of the three.
Having said that, the prospect of another new venue would also be interesting, as I've thoroughly enjoyed exploring the local countryside at both DFR3 and DFR4, as well as the official rides.

If in June, the weekend of the 24th would be right out for me - wife's birthday. Otherwise OK as far as I know. On past experience I would be unlikely to be able to stay overnight. Previous DFRs have been about as far as I would want to drive there & back in a day. But a good rail connection could enable me to go further (and imbibe more freely in the pubs).

I agree that it is very nice to go and see different parts of the country and do different rides. Although I will happily check availability of the DFR2 site, which does give us the whole run of the site, and also is very cheap.
Maybe we need a rough idea of who might be coming because judging by traffic here over the last few months, there's not quite as many about as in the last couple of years at this point.

I'd asked Kev to send a search party to look for you, mainly centred around the pub, and then he dropped the bombshell that your local had closed down! That is quite a blow? Anyway, glad to hear from you, and already DFR5 looks a little healthier now you're in.

Pete - I can believe many things, but you not having much to say stretches credibility!!?? Haha. You can always go 'off topic ' if you want, you've been awarded freedom of the forum and a key to town gates ( and you can herd sheep across the Trent Bridge if you so wish)

Hi all - my first time checking in in a long time! Cath & I have the 3rd til 17th June booked off of work so any other dates would be very difficult for me to make again. This time is booked for our honeymoon but it may well be a midlands based staycation so I could probably get permission to attend!

I, too, think Ledbury sounds great, but would happily re-attend last year's campsite. I'll go anywhere where you are, as usual. I'll also commit to any date--no matter what, I'll make it happen, because Death Fork Rallys can't be missed, and I'm looking forward to see everyone again. I might have been very quiet on here, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten about you, or stopped loving Viscounts. That'll never happen! I've just been busy and distracted with other things, like orchids. :-)

Thumbing through the comments suggests that the weekends of either 3rd/4th or 10th/11th June are preferred.
Does anyone want to make the call between these two by declaring themselves unavailable for either weekend?
Ledbury is OK for me, but I did wonder if anyone has cycled around or near Lichfield? It has a Cathedral, canals and countryside, rail and road connections and is sort of in the middle of England, so equally convenient/inconvenient for everyone to get to.

I'm ok for both dates as of this moment. We were not far from Lichfield for the very first Rally, and then 2 years ago, we were not far off again by the time we'd cycled to the pub. ( but we were on opposite sides of the A38, which in my experience cuts rides down the middle and you tend to go one side or the other, rarely both- no reason why you can't traverse but for some reason is rarely done). The ride to Lichfield cathedral isn't particularly nice and has no approach view until you're on top of it but the actual place is very nice. I think if we can get the date fixed, see who's potentially coming then make a call on location and camp site? (EDIT- just realised the error of my last statement...without knowing where it is, some folk won't commit), so it'll never get planned if you listened to me!

I haven't yet made my mind up about Eroica, although I keep getting e-mails to say that ride places are diminishing rapidly. Other than that I can make any date, but some people won't be able to make it on whichever date we settle on. If pushed, I'd say 10th/11th June.
