Hi all - I hope I don't live to regret this but I am making some changes to the forum. As you can see at the top of the page, the adverts are gone and I was going to add some targeted adverts specific to bike products. The reasoning behind this is that it should generate enough revenue to pay for the removal of the other adverts. But half way into this process, I have discovered that Google Adsense do not allow third party sites (such as this one) to embed Google Ads in them. The solution was presented to me that I just register a custom domain name - I picked one up for next to nothing, which is lambertandviscount.onlineNow, by this point, I was in way over my head with the technical stuff and have spent a few hours scratching my head and getting lost, posting up on web site designer forums and asking for help. I realised very quickly that they speak a different language and that I don't really get any of it. So, at some point this site might have a different address at the top - but from what I believe and have been told, it won't make much difference to users as they will be automatically redirected to the new address without any issue. I don't think it will prevent new people from finding who just Google 'Viscount bike' But, bear with me and don't panic if things go down for a short while. It will no doubt have some teething issues but I hope it will be worth it in the long run. But I do fear hearing those famous words..."if it ain't broke don't fix it" EDIT - that other address is up and running with ads. I was under the impression that there would eventually just be one unified address (maybe that takes a while to filter through?) Either way, I will keep everyone updated EDIT 2 - Just been told that both addresses run parallel and it is an exact mirror. No change at all.

Do we cover your administration and registration costs in pints at DFR4, or are they more substantial than that?

Is the lambertandviscount.online link supposed to work?

The link isn't working for me either. Is there anyone under 40 who can help the administrator? Members of the luddite club need not apply

The link was working, but not now.
This is all compounded by the fact that changes in the settings sometimes take a few hours to take effect. So, it's like tinkering with the RD screw and thinking it's ok, only for the chain to slip over the top next day and not know which change brought it about...
Either way, this one is still working , so I will leave off from tinkering for a while.
Rob- yes, it is literally just the cost of a pint a month. Not that I am looking to sink 12 pints at DFR4...I will leave that to our 'proper drinkers'.

Oh, the link did work. I wondered if maybe 1st post links to Craig's List for example, sometimes don't work to keep out spammers but maybe links in posts after the 1st one? Just speculation but I thought I'd say that because that's the way it works in that Craig's List round up thread I posted. Thank you for investing on this forum; we can't thank you enough. Ads don't bother me too much and I would think we can keep down the costs of posting images now that we know. Also, if one wants to post pictures of their bikes, heck, that pedal room is pretty good and it is not real busy like the "velo space" website is. Pedal Room is fairly quiet in comparison. I guess one could even post bikes in a somewhat state of disrepair. Open up a free account and then post pictures of the bikes: www.pedalroom.com/My aerospace, www.pedalroom.com/bike/viscount-aerospace-2159I don't know why we didn't think of this before lads. PS, maybe tomorrow or so, I will create a separate thread stating the above about Pedal Room. Maybe CFC would be the same but it does seem one would have room to manoeuvre over at Pedal Room dot com (in case the link gets scrambled) That's using the noggin!

Update on ads on forum. I have since found out that the adverts cannot be targeted to bike specific products. Google pick them based on each persons internet history. So basically, I search for 'flights' or 'holidays' and those are the adverts I will see. Good news is that in the last couple of days I earned 0.03p It doesn't sound much but that is fine, int won't be long before that would cover all costs (not that the cost bothers me at all anyway, it's very very low) If you don't mind the adverts and can see yourself towards updating your bookmark to this address lambertandviscount.online and occasionally click an advert, it would be much appreciated. Who knows, if we had as many views on that updated domain address that we have on 'old' address then maybe one day we can fund the DFR's drinking fund with it?! That sounds like a fine target to me. Thanks for your help

It's no big deal to me, really, I should never logout actually but I note, it is not allowing me to logout even when I manually do it. Maybe it has to do with the other website that was set up because I went over there as well. Only if I am lurking and do not care to be seen though, is this important to be able logout really. I logged out here, I am not logged in at: lambertandviscount.online/But I still am logged in here; oh well, it really doesn't matter.

I tend to leave the page constantly open, so I've just refreshed it and the web page has now changed from viscountandlambert.boards.net to lambertandviscount.online - and I didn't do a thing!
Might just try logging in to the old address later.

Might be worth logging out, clearing all the your internet history, cookies, cached website data ect. then logging in. That will sort out the log-in/log-out bugs I would think. Cheers for the efforts Admin!

I recently cleaned out my cache completely. Now when I click and log in it takes me right to the new site. Cheers to all, and I will unblock ads from this site. Might even click one or two once in a while. Thanks!

Hi all - A quick update on the 'new' site.(or URL/Domain etc and the adverts) If you get chance, can you update your book marks (clear your cache?) and if you are feeling charitable, can you turn off the ad blockers for this address. If you are feeling more than charitable ,say, almost benevolent, then could I twist your arms to click on an advert now and then please? My long term idea is that the adverts will pay their way. It is possible to upgrade the amount of space for pictures we can host etc (although I would still prefer if people host elsewhere and link, but that's another post) But my other dream would be to cover costs of some things for the Rally or printing of bits and pieces (stickers/decals/?) that we could then send out for free to members. Or better still, to crowd fund the Lambert/Viscount book that Bustaste was writing a while back! lambertandviscount.online

Just a reminder that if you are in needs of any products that are advertised on the forum, then it really helps towards the advert revenue if you are happy to click through them and visit page.
While we are never going to be able to retire (it makes single digit figures most days, sometimes up in to multiples of 10's . pennies not £). These will all go toward 'group' things for the Rallys etc.

Harmon Kardon loudspeaker systems and Philadelphia cream cheese for me. Some nice cheesecake recipes. I wonder how they'd sound through better speakers. Hmm...

Haha ...I believe the ads are 'personalised' links to previous searches based on the user. But, I can just see you with a plate of crackers with Philadelphia on it, listening to your expensive sound system Rob, and Triitout cruising in his Lexus down to the local bike shop. I have summer music festivals and ruck sacks showing today.
ps we are in triple figures for ad revenue today....albeit with a decimal place after the first number (which happens to be a 1) so I won't give up the day job just yet.

Sad news....Google Adsense have pulled the plug on the adverts. We had reached the grand total of £35 - on some days it was just pennies, then on others maybe £5-8. The reason was that they found an 'account violation.' They wouldn't specify but reasons can include a whole range of things. I did appeal, but that was rejected. All I can think of was that on the day when I mentioned about 'maybe clicking on the ads', we peaked at £10.22 for the day...and they got suspicious? It is on the list of banned things that I didn't read. So, you were all 'too successful' in your enthusiasm to help the cause. And there I was just calculating that if we continued at that rate, how many pints that would buy for DFR4!! They get to keep all the money, not just the amount they think I 'induced' with my solicitation. I'm not whining about this , but merely posting to keep you up to date. There is another advert provider that I can use...and if I do get it up and running then I will not mention them at all and will not ask for clicks

Poor Google! They've just been hit with that massive UK tax bill (not), I expect they have to save every penny. Perhaps we should have a whip round to save the company?
But seriously, for such a small amount? I don't imagine the advertisers really care why people go to their sites. The conversion rates must be extremely low, I would think that they were almost as likely to make a sale from someone who clicked through to make a few cents for a friend as from someone who had an initial interest in the product.
